Saharanpur: River and Mountain Adventure Sports

Saharanpur, previously in the state of Uttar Pradesh, now being part of the exotic Uttaranchal state, stretches between the holy rivers of the Ganges and the Yamuna. With low altitude Shivalik hills on its northern side and being a low lying valley with swamps and wide open grass, the topography of Saharanpur is unique and one of its kind in northern India. Just 168 Kms from Delhi, it lies very close to Rishikesh (Yoga Capital of the World), the holy city Haridwar and Dehradun. The intricate network of Mountain Rivers flowing through some thrilling gorges, forests and remote villages is an ideal backdrop for adrenalin rushing adventure.

Whitewater Rafting at Saharanpur

Whitewater rafting has gained immense popularity in this region with Rishikesh, just about 50 miles from Saharanpur, becoming the main center for river rafting in the entire North India. It is an exhilarating experience for both amateurs and professionals, with trainers available to give you a certificate course as well. Rafting here is mostly done on imported rafts and great importance is given to the safety aspect. You need to be good swimmer to get into any water sports, however with the advanced safety water jackets weak swimmers and even stone sinkers are enjoying this sport.

As per international standards the rapids here are also graded from the easy of one to the most difficult being six. Three Blind Mice, Golf Course, Sweet Sixteen, Daniel's Dip, Marine Drive, Roller Coaster, and Cross Fire are just a few rapids, which provide the thrill and an unbelievable encounter with Mother Nature. The long stretch of the Ganges provides a whole gamut of challenges to the rafters.

The Adventure Sports Galore

Apart from rafting there are host of other adventure sports in which one can indulge. A two hour trek to the nearby Garhwali village, with abundance of flora and fauna is a must for every nature lover. Other popular treks ranging from 16 Km to 42 Km are Dodi Tal, Sat Tal and Dayara Bugyal. To relax one can also opt for trout fishing. For the risk takers and adrenalin junkies, the region provides rock climbing, rappelling, kayaking and cliff jumping. Mountaineering can also be done on the terrains of Garhwal between April and November. Equipments can be hired or purchased from the agencies specializing in mountaineering.
